The Eagles may not have the best goal tally this season but some of their players have an outstanding ability to win a ball. Three Palace players are all among the top six Premier League players with the most tackles won.
While it takes some courage to commit to tackling in the Premier League, some footballers not only throw themselves onto the ground to stop their attacking opponents but come away with the ball.
The stats from Opta-powered fantasy football game Oulala.com reveal that Crystal Palace trio Martin Kelly, Joel Ward and Mile Jedinak are all standout performers in this category.
Chelsea’s main man in midfield Nemanja Matic leads the list with 69 successful tackles, while both Palace defender Martin Kelly and Hull City’s George Boyd take the second place with 58 tackles won. Fourth is right-back Nathaniel Clyne who has won 56 tackles in 22 appearances for Southampton this season, followed by two Eagles’ players: Joel Ward has managed 52 tackles, the same as his team-mate Mile Jedinak who is, according to combined stats, the second best Premier League midfielder only behind Eden Hazard. In addition to that, no defensive midfielder in the PL has managed more tackles than the Socceroos captain who together with Dwight Gayle is the club’s top scorer in the English top flight with five goals.
Jedinak returned from the Asian Cup last week with a sore ankle so he is a doubt as the Eagles host Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew, who is looking forward to face his former team, is also hoping to put on a match-winning smile at Selhurst Park. The last away victory against Leicester City lifted Palace to 13th as they moved out of the relegation zone.
